Dave is a drug addict. Although, at the time, Dave had no idea what he was about to do was going to haunt him for a large part of his life. One night he decided to try something new out and since then he has had to pay the consequences.

Since the years that Dave quit using drugs, his health has definitely gone downhill, some of the adverse affects of him doing drugs for so many years. At first, I didn??™t notice it very much because it became a part of his life style and part of his persona. The ideas behind government conspiracy slowly but surely tuned into Dave getting so paranoid people were after him, and his money, that doctors started believing that Dave had the beginning signs of schizophrenia. This is when all of us, who are his friends, had to start making up excuses and defending his actions to other people. After a while we started having to make excuses on why Dave was losing so much weight and not looking healthy. We would go along with his excuse about his stressful home life. As his addiction was getting worse, even we were starting to fall off the Dave band wagon. For some reason, enough was starting to become enough when Dave??™s aggressive nature started coming out. Since I am the closest friend with Dave, I didn??™t notice when he became physically aggressive; until one night after I let Dave stay over. When he came down, we got in to a heated argument about drugs ,and before I knew it, I was in a shoving match with Dave. That??™s when I finally started to realize that the comments about him being short tempered were true. I guess that some times when you don??™t want to see a problem it??™s just easier not to admit it??™s there.

When Dave is on drugs we would occasionally make a comment about the situation. Dave would simply state that what he does only effects him, so we should stay out of his business. What Dave didn??™t realize was that his drug use affects the many people who cared about him. At first his girlfriend thought it was a phase that he would grow out of; so she decided to go along with their relationship and eventually got married and had a little boy. But after many years the situation only got worse. Ann, Dave??™s wife, would leave for a while till Dave cleaned up then she would come right back to him. This happened for a few years until she realized that Dave was not going to just out grow the phase. Ann eventually left Dave, took the kids out of fear that he would hurt her or one of the kids. Dave continues to use the same drugs that took his family away, but does not correlate the two and how they affect each other.

During the time when Dave was on drugs he would tell us about how hard he has it in life, how others are keeping him down, and that he never gets a fair chance. At first we all agreed with him but after a while the same song and dance got old. What Dave didn??™t think about is that he has been setting himself up for failure since the first time he started using. Before Dave started getting in to his bad habits, he had a great job working as a union contractor doing concrete work; but this all came to a close when the money he used to pay people turned in to the money he purchased drugs with. As you could tell, this was not going to work out for long. After a while people stopped accepting the excuses, demanded their money, and quit. The straw that broke the camel??™s back was when he received a government contract for a new building. One of the stipulations was that anyone on the construction site had to take a drug test. Typically this would not be a big deal, but since he was there the first day, he had to take the drug test as well. As you could assume, he didn??™t pass. At the last minute, they took the contract away and he lost the job. Since Dave had planned on this contract, he did not line up other jobs for the remainder of the year. Dave also had all his resources tied in to the project as well, so in turn his business never recovered from the drug test.

The good news is that Dave cleaned up and got back on the right track. He is now together with his wife and kid and has a job. Even though Dave didn??™t plan on affecting anyone??™s lives when he first started using drugs, he inadvertently changed everyone??™s lives and tied them in to the chains of addiction.
